Giroud still set to join AC Milan but on one condition

AC Milan had reached an agreement with Olivier Giroud but Chelsea announced his contract extension until 2022.

Many were surprised by Chelsea’s announcement that they had extended the contract of Olivier Giroud until 2022. Even more confusing were the words of the French striker that “Milan is an option for my future“. But what has really happened?

AC Milan had agreed a two-year contract with Olivier Giroud until 2023 at 4 million euros per season. The World Cup winner would have arrived on a free transfer. In fact, Chelsea have used an option to unilaterally renew his contract for one more year.

Nevertheless, there parties have a gentlemen’s agreement that if the striker receives a pleasing offer from a foreign club he can leave despite the recent contract renewal. The Rossoneri, who had planned to announce his signing next week, have contacted his agents.

As far as AC Milan are concerned, Giroud must solve this situation with Chelsea. The Rossoneri have no intention to pay any transfer fee (the Blues value the player at 5 million euros) and the initial agreement stands only if the French striker arrives as a free agent.

If Giroud and Chelsea don’t find a quick resolution, AC Milan will turn their attention to other names. It’s now entirely up to the player to convince Chelsea to respect their agreement. According to reports, Milan remain the first choice of the 34-year-old centre forward.
